Why We Drink Coffee
Based on the statistics, it is estimated that over one billion people drink coffee every single day.
A daily morning routine, part of a certain culture, health benefits for some, livelihood for those involved in the coffee sector, hobbies, and lifestyles are some reasons why people drink coffee.
Among the different reasons, we can agree that they are all respectable differences. Differences make colours; it is a good thing.
However, I do have curiosity, which leads me to a question.
My question is, “What about the similarity for the same one billion people who drink coffee every day?”
After long, thoughtful thinking, perhaps there is one similarity (one reason) that could be elaborated on. Yes, there is but one reason that we all have in common for why we drink coffee.
This article is an attempt to draw this one similarity (one reason) from all the respectable differences among the one billion people.

Coffee connects people? |
The one reason
Developing what we are personally wanting to pursue in our lives, believe it or not, is the easier part. The harder part is often when we find ourselves having to express it.
Our human way of expressing ourselves comes in many forms,

As mentioned, everyone has their own different reason for drinking coffee, but let’s find one similar reason here.
If you drink coffee as a customer, then it is an expression of yourself; this can be perhaps a statement of lifestyles, hobbies, health benefits, etc.
If you are a professional in the coffee sector, then drinking coffee is the expression of production, business, and livelihood that you are servicing.
If you drink coffee due to a certain event that makes you so, such as a visit to a coffee exhibition, this is an expression of social, involvement, etc. for something that you now love to be a part of and enjoy representing.
If you drink coffee because of a friend, family member, or direct influence from others, this is the expression of networking, marketing, etc. for a deeper cause of relating and the desire to form a bond with the person who influenced you.
Multiple different reasons, but the one constant is expressing “something” through the medium of coffee.
For example, the coffee taster flavour wheel might seem like a tool to help us develop coffee sensory skills; yes, it sure is, but ultimately it is a tool to help us express ourselves.
Our unique selves, the respectable difference Yet one thing is the same in all of us, as we all express it via coffee in our own way.
Every single day, there are one billion people choosing to express themselves via the medium of coffee, for indeed, coffee expression is a strong one.
Coffee connects people?
We often hear the phrase “coffee connects people”, but what exactly is the context of this phrase? Can coffee really connect people?
I do not think coffee by itself can, but when given expression, it certainly can.
The coffee farmer, trader, roaster, merchant, barista, and customer all give their coffee their own expression.
When looking at a personal level, we shall also realise that with every great coffee that we personally enjoy, it is because the coffee has a certain expression that matters to us, hence great.
In summary, everyone has their own reason for drinking coffee, and coffee has different expressions for different people. However, expression, that is, expressing ourselves through the medium of coffee, is what we all do.
We express ourselves, hoping to be understood. This is why we drink coffee. It is the one reason that the one billion was shared.
